After a long 180(ish) days of school, it’s finally summer break! ☀️
The boys are thrilled, and we kicked things off with a visit from old friends—hiking, s’mores, BBQs, dirt, sun—and then straight into pool opening day! 🏊♀️🔥 By Monday evening, our base tans were glowing and our hearts (and snack bellies) were very full.
Then Tuesday morning hit.
We have approximately 12 weeks between now and the start of school. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not trying to rush summer. Every kid deserves an endless stretch of late nights, beach days, dripping ice cream, pool floats, and sun-kissed skin. The smell of sunscreen alone is basically childhood in a bottle. 🧴✨
But as a mom working a full-time job (aka no summer break), I start to spiral a little when I look at my weekday schedule for the next 12 weeks:
Wake up → gym → coffee (cup 1) ☕ → meetings/calls → game of Rack-O while answering emails → more meetings →
“no, you can’t watch another episode of Paw Patrol” → coffee (cup 2) →
“yes, I’ll get the Play-Doh… no, it’s not tablet time” → more meetings →
“I will take you to the pool later when I’m done working… please go outside!” 🌿 → coffee (cup 3, iced) 🧊 → meetings →
“fine, you can play your Switch until I’m done” 🎮 → one more email → laptop slam shut → PROSECCO. 🍾
So this summer, I’m on a mission: be prepared.
The more intentional I am with activities for the kids, the smoother my workday goes—and the less everyone asks, “What can I dooooo?” every 4.7 minutes.
Unfortunately, our summer kicked off with a little rain and chilly temps, so my grand plan of “just send them outside with chalk and a basketball” is currently… not going to plan. 🌧️
Instead, we’ve been leaning hard into some tried-and-true indoor toys and activities that keep them busy, creative, and blissfully screen-free for longer stretches than I thought possible.
Here are our go-to boredom busters that save my workday sanity and keep the house (mostly) intact:
⛺ 1. Build a Fort
There is something magical about a fort. Give my boys a few blankets, couch cushions, and chairs and suddenly they're camping in the mountains, hiding from pirates, or building a secret headquarters.
Mom Tip: Add flashlights, books, or a snack tray to keep the fun going even longer. Feel free to suggest they use their own pillows and blankets so your decorative throw pillows don’t end up with melted snack and crayon stains!
What You'll Need:
Blankets
Pillows
Chairs
Flashlights (optional)
⚙️ 2. Gravitrax
This is one of those activities that keeps my boys entertained far longer than I expect (Thank you to the amazing friends who gifted us this for a birthday last year!). They love building different marble runs, testing designs, and seeing how fast they can get the marble to travel through the track.
Not only is it fun, but it sneaks in a little STEM learning too.
Mom Tip: Challenge your kids to build the tallest track or create a run that lasts the longest.
What You'll Need:
Gravitrax starter set
Expansion packs (optional)
We LOVE this starter pack. https://mavely.app.link/O4X3i0ZaD3b
🏒 3. Knee Hockey Tournament
Knee hockey is a favorite in our house. It burns energy, sparks a little friendly competition, and works great in a basement, playroom, or hallway.
We like to set up mini tournaments and keep score on a whiteboard.
Mom Tip: Create a championship bracket and let siblings compete for the family title.
What You'll Need:
Knee hockey sticks
Soft hockey ball
Mini goal

🚗 4. Hot Wheels Car Wash
This one is especially fun on hot summer days. Fill a bin with warm water and a little soap, then let the kids scrub all those dusty Hot Wheels cars.
If things get extra messy, move the whole operation to the bathtub for easy cleanup!
Mom Tip: Give each child a sponge or old toothbrush and let them detail their cars like a real car wash.
What You'll Need:
Hot Wheels cars
Plastic bin or tub
Soap and water
Sponges or brushes
🏃♂️ 5. Indoor Obstacle Course
When the kids are bouncing off the walls, I lean into it.
Use couch cushions, painter's tape, chairs, and stuffed animals to create a simple obstacle course. Crawl under tables, hop between pillows, balance on tape lines, and race to the finish.
Mom Tip: Time each run and challenge kids to beat their own record.
What You'll Need:
Pillows
Painter's tape
Chairs
Stuffed animals
💛 Summer doesn't always have to mean screen time. Sometimes the simplest activities end up being the biggest hits. These five boredom busters have saved many afternoons in our house and helped keep my boys active, creative, and entertained while I work from home.
