If there’s one thing I love, it’s finding ways to make birthdays feel extra special without making them overly complicated. For my son’s 6th birthday party he asked to watch the newly released Minions and Monsters movie at home with friends! Since it was his birthday we had to do something a little more exciting than just a movie on the TV so, we decided to turn our backyard into a drive-in movie theater, complete with Minions on the big screen, popcorn, glow sticks, movie theater snacks, and of course, a Minion cake and Monster cupcakes!

We wanted a party that felt fun for the kids but was still simple enough to pull together at home. This backyard drive-in was such a fun way to celebrate, and it’s an idea you could easily recreate for a birthday party, summer night, or even a family movie night.

Here’s how we put it all together!

The Backyard Drive-In Movie Setup

Of course, the main event was the outdoor movie! We borrowed a big screen from a friend and used a projector we already had to bring the movie to the “big screen” right in our backyard. With an October birthday in Colorado, you never know what the weather will have in store, so we made sure to plan for anything. Thankfully, we lucked out with a beautiful fall evening! We set out plenty of blankets (we love our outdoor blankets for movie nights, soccer games and fall fun!) and chairs so the kids could bundle up, get cozy, and enjoy their own little backyard drive-in experience.

One of my favorite additions to our backyard drive-in was giving each kid a light-up pop tube to use during the movie! These colorful, flexible tubes stretch, bend, and twist into all kinds of shapes, and the lights have different flashing patterns the kids can switch between. They had so much fun turning them into glowing necklaces and bracelets while watching the movie under the stars. They were a simple, inexpensive way to add some extra fun (and a little glow!) to our outdoor movie night.

Movie Theater Snacks the Kids Loved

You can’t have a drive-in movie night without classic movie theater snacks! But before we loaded the kids up on sugar, we needed to make sure everyone had dinner first.

Instead of setting everything out on a traditional buffet table, we served dinner in little paper food boats. It was a simple detail that added to the classic drive-in feel, and the kids could easily hold their food in their laps while lounging in their outdoor chairs.

Our kid-friendly dinner menu included:

  • Chicken nuggets

  • Mac and cheese

  • Tater tots

My tip: Keep the menu simple! Birthday parties are busy enough, and familiar kid-friendly foods are usually a safe bet. You don’t need a complicated menu to make the party feel special.

Once dinner was out of the way, it was time for the main event: movie snacks! We put together individual concession-style snack boxes filled with homemade popcorn, boxes of candy, fruit snacks, and kids choice of either lemonade or soda! Not only did the kids love having their own movie night treats, but the little snack boxes were such a fun way to tie the whole drive-in theme together!

My favorite detail had to be the homemade popcorn! And not the microwave kind—we made it fresh using an actual movie theater popcorn machine. The smell of freshly popped popcorn filled the air, and the kids loved watching it pop before scooping it into their own bags. It was such a simple touch, but it made the whole experience feel like a real trip to the movie theater!

Our popcorn machine isn’t just for birthday parties! It’s perfect for family movie nights, hosting friends for the big game, or any time you want to make an ordinary night feel a little more special. It pops fresh popcorn in minutes and is easy to clean, making it a fun addition to our home that we can use all year long! I highly recommend!

Minions & Monsters Birthday Cake and Cupcakes

No party is complete without a birthday cake (and cupcakes) to match the theme!

I made a Minions-inspired birthday cake for my son and little monster mini cupcakes to go along with it. He chose a strawberry flavor for the cake and funfetti for the cupcakes which was great because there was a little something for every taste bud! The cake was the centerpiece of our dessert table, and the mini cupcakes were a fun way to incorporate the monster theme without making everything match perfectly.

I love making birthday treats at home because you can customize them to whatever theme your child is excited about. They don’t have to look bakery-perfect to make the birthday feel special! For these treats, I kept things simple with boxed cake mixes, store-bought frosting, and a little good ol’ fondant and food coloring to bring the decorations to life.

The Little Details That Made It Fun

Sometimes it’s the small details that make a party memorable.

The light-up glow straws were one of my favorite additions. They added a fun glow-in-the-dark element to the party and fit perfectly with the outdoor movie setup.

Combined with the popcorn, individual snack boxes, and blankets spread around the yard, the kids had everything they needed for their own little backyard movie experience.

I also loved that the setup gave the kids a chance to settle in together and enjoy the movie after playing and celebrating.

Party tip: If you’re hosting your own outdoor movie night, have blankets and chairs ready before guests arrive, and keep snacks easy to grab. If you’re planning to watch after sunset, check the weather and have a backup plan in case it gets chilly or rainy.

Final Thoughts

Our Minions and Monsters drive-in birthday party was such a fun way to celebrate turning six! Between the outdoor movie, fresh popcorn, movie theater snacks, glow straws, and themed birthday treats, it felt like a special event without needing an over-the-top party setup.

I’m always looking for ways to make celebrations memorable while keeping things manageable for busy mom life, and this is definitely an idea I’d recommend if you’re planning a movie-loving kid’s birthday.
